KNOB16 REMOTE SCRIPT FOR ABLETON LIVE
Version 1.4

This Remote Script connects Ableton Live to Knob16 on your iPhone or iPad.
With it, Knob16 Live Mode can control:

  - Device: the first 8 parameters of the selected device, with device and
    track navigation
  - Mixer: track volume, pan and sends, plus return tracks
  - Macros: Rack macros across several tracks
  - Transport: Play, Stop, Record and Capture MIDI

Knob labels and values follow Live automatically.

REQUIREMENTS

  - Ableton Live 12 (Lite, Intro, Standard or Suite). Earlier versions of
    Live are not supported.
  - macOS or Windows
  - Knob16 for iPhone or iPad, from the App Store
  - A MIDI connection between the iPhone or iPad and the computer: USB,
Network MIDI (Wi-Fi) or Bluetooth MIDI

Live Mode is part of Knob16 Pro. Without Pro, you can try it in limited
24-hour trials.

INSTALLATION

1. Unzip the download. You get a "Remote Scripts" folder with a "Knob16"
folder in it. Do not rename the "Knob16" folder.

2. In Ableton Live's Browser, right-click "User Library" and choose
"Show in Finder" (macOS) or "Show in Explorer" (Windows). This opens
your actual User Library folder, even if you moved it.

3. Quit Ableton Live.

4. In the User Library folder that opened, create a folder named
"Remote Scripts" if it does not already exist. Copy the unzipped
   "Knob16" folder into it.

The result must look like this:

     User Library/
       Remote Scripts/
         Knob16/
           __init__.py
           Knob16.py
           ...

Put the "Knob16" folder directly inside "Remote Scripts", not inside
   another folder.

5. Start Ableton Live.

SETUP IN ABLETON LIVE

1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer. See "MIDI connection"
   below.

2. Open Live's settings: Live > Settings (macOS) or Options > Settings
   (Windows).

3. Open the "Link, Tempo & MIDI" tab.

4. In an empty Control Surface slot:
     Control Surface: Knob16
Input: the name of your iPhone or iPad
Output: the name of your iPhone or iPad

5. Under MIDI Ports, find your iPhone or iPad and switch on "Track" and
"Remote" for both its input and its output. For the input, also switch
   on "MPE".

6. Open Knob16. When the connection to Live is ready, the MIDI indicator
at the top of the app turns blue and shows LIVE. Live Mode is now
   available in the mode grid.

MIDI CONNECTION

USB (macOS)
Connect the iPhone or iPad with a cable. Open Audio MIDI Setup
(Applications > Utilities), choose Window > Show Audio Devices and click
"Enable" under the iPhone or iPad. It then appears as a MIDI port in Live.

Network MIDI (Wi-Fi)
macOS: open Audio MIDI Setup, choose Window > Show MIDI Studio and click
the Network icon. Create a session with the + button, enable it, and
connect Knob16 from the Directory list. Both devices must be on the same
  Wi-Fi network.
Windows: use a Network MIDI driver such as rtpMIDI and create a session
  in the same way.

Bluetooth MIDI (macOS)
Open Audio MIDI Setup, choose Window > Show MIDI Studio, click the
Bluetooth icon and click "Advertise". In Knob16, open Settings >
Bluetooth MIDI and connect to your Mac.

The in-app manual (Knob16 > Settings > Manual) describes each connection
in more detail.

MIDI CHANNEL

The script and Knob16 talk on one MIDI channel. The default is channel 16.

To change it, open Knob16 > Settings > Connections > Ableton Channel.
Knob16 sends the new channel to the script automatically, so you never
need to change anything in Live.

The script uses CC 102-117 on this channel. Avoid sending other MIDI to
these CCs on the same channel.

UPDATING FROM AN EARLIER VERSION

1. Quit Ableton Live.
2. Delete the old "Knob16" folder from Remote Scripts completely. Do not
copy the new files over the old ones.
3. Install the new "Knob16" folder as described above.
4. Start Live. Your Control Surface settings are kept.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Knob16 does not appear in the Control Surface list
  - Check that the folder is named exactly "Knob16" and sits directly
    inside "Remote Scripts".
  - Restart Live after copying the folder.

The indicator in Knob16 does not turn blue
  - Check that Input and Output of the Knob16 Control Surface are set to
    your iPhone or iPad.
  - Check that "Remote" is on for that port's input and output.
  - In Knob16, open Settings > MIDI Destination and check that the computer
is listed and selected (or choose Automatic).
  - Reconnect the cable or the Network MIDI session, then reopen Knob16.

Knobs move the wrong parameters, or labels do not update
  - Make sure no other Control Surface uses the same MIDI port.
  - Select a different track or device in Live, then select it again.

Live's log file can help with other problems:
  macOS: ~/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live <version>/Log.txt
  Windows: C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live <version>\Preferences\Log.txt
Lines from the script start with "Knob16:".

UNINSTALLING

Remove Knob16 from the Control Surface slot in Live's settings, quit Live
and delete the "Knob16" folder from Remote Scripts.
